Is There Any Wicked Way In Me?
‘God knows that in the day you eat from this tree you will be like Him.’
By saying this Satan was maligning God’s character to Adam and Eve. Instead of pushing that suggestion away they accepted it as true. They agreed with the Devil that God, their Father was selfish.
This accusation against His person and His Love(for they are the same thing) lies hidden like a snake deep in the subconscious mind. It must be driven out by the fire of His jealousy for us.
The accusation is that God does not care for you more than He cares for Himself. Satan made out that we can trust him to look after our best interests, but we cannot trust God to do the same. “After all”, he reasons, “God made a Rule that we cannot eat from the tree in the garden because He selfishly does not want us to be like Him”. The Serpent whispers:
“So forget God and the tree of Life, come my children, follow me. Get knowledge! Get the hidden, esoteric occult knowledge, then you can heal yourself, and others, then you can rise above others and be a great man. Just follow me and I will help you do this.” I wrote about this HERE, to do with Simon the Sorcerer.
But it is not only those who overtly practice occultism that believe that God cannot be trusted but every human ever born is born with this lie in the bedrock of their being. Some of us during our life come to a living faith encounter with Jesus Christ and begin a journey of knowing God. Along the way we discover like Isaac in the previous post, that even though we are born again and have a new nature, we still may have hidden relics from the Serpent nature that are exerting their power over us.
For instance, Peter had to be shown three times in a clear vision that God has cleansed all men through the sacrifice of Jesus. Peter, being raised a Jew had inbuilt bias and even distrust and disgust for Gentiles. This is from the old nature. God had to show Peter that the god he was taught as a youth by the Rabbis, was NOT the correct view of the heart of God for Mankind. See Acts 10.
We all come to God with various errors in our understanding of God and His relations with man. We pick up things as children from our parents attitudes, our peers, our culture. The attitudes of the world are all under the sway or influence of the evil one. The world has an attitude or inner belief about God whether they profess to be believers or not. Deep in the heart of every person they know that there is a God but also deep in their heart they know that God is a punishing hard self centered God. They get this view of God ultimately from Satan, for it is what he thinks.
2 Co 4:3 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 2 Co 4:4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
Satan, the god of this age blinds people to the GOODNESS of God through the power of the lie I am speaking about here. So instead of coming to Him, they try their best to look out for themselves, not even realising that they are prisoners of Satan and are in his power. Also for those who are already Christ’s through being Born again into His family by faith alone, we too can be blinded by the same lies lurking unseen in the heart.
Eph 4:17 This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that , in the futility of their mind, Eph 4:18 having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; Eph 4:19 who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. Eph 4:20 But you have not so learned Christ, Eph 4:21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: Eph 4:22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, Eph 4:23 and Eph 4:24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
By this passage we see that it is possible to walk as the blind unbelievers do. That is why Paul tells them not to be blind, but rather BE RENEWED IN THE SPIRIT OF YOUR MIND.
A few other versions translate verse 23 like this:
(GW) However, you were taught to have a new attitude.
(ISV) to be renewed in your mental attitude,
(JUB) and be renewed in the spirit of your understanding
Paul is speaking about this deeper mind, the INNER ATTITUDES of our mind on which are written either truth or lies. For years I thought that just by reading a lot of scripture and quoting appropriate verses to myself to combat my battle with fear or shame would do the trick. But no matter how I tried to rise above shame and fear and to walk with God in the Spirit, I would fail. You see, many are trying to use God’s word as a tool to heal themselves. But this is self righteousness, self trying to heal self. The lies deep within that accuse God of not caring for us, cause us to take matters into our own hands. After many failures and going around in circles, each time experiencing a little more of His mercy and grace when He comes and lovingly picks us up again, we eventually will come to Him and simply ask Him to do it.
So I come to Psalm 139:23,24, which I finished my last post with.
Psa 139:23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; Psa 139:24 And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting. NKJV
I want to focus on that bold phrase,
“see if there is any wicked way in me.”
The writer of the psalm obviously does not himself know if there is any wicked way in his heart that is causing problems. So he asks God, Who knows all things about him. Makes sense doesn’t it?
Yet many in the body of Christ are offended with anyone suggesting that there could be any wicked way in their heart because, they reason, that Jesus has cleansed their heart and washed them in His blood. Yes!! Absolutely YES. God has reconciled us to Himself, He has put our sins away by the sacrifice of His Son. Because of that sacrifice we are made right with God, being justified freely by His grace. BUT(and they hate me saying but) these lies in the deep mind are not making us UNRIGHTEOUS before God. No. The lies, which are what the Psalmist calls “any wicked way in me”, are hindrances to walking in full communion and fellowship with the Lord. This is why God saved you! He saved us so that we might come to experientially KNOW HIM. He did not save you so you would not go to Hell. He saved you from the hurtful abusive father – Satan, so you would come to know His father’s love for you.
Joh 17:3 And this is eternal(aionion) life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
Life is to know God. Many think life is to escape Hell. Or to have your sins forgiven. As wonderful as that is, it is only the very beginning of the journey. It is like Israel in Egypt eating the Passover Lamb. There were to be bitter herbs in that meal. This is a reminder of the bitterness of Pharaoh’s harshness. But then God led them towards the sweet land of milk and honey. Along the way they drank water that was bitter, but then made sweet by a stick(the cross) thrown in it.
If Israel had stayed in Egypt after eating Passover they would never have grown spiritually or fulfilled their destiny as a nation. It is the same for us. Getting born again or “Saved” is wonderful, but we must go on from there through the wilderness of life, coming to Pentecost at Sinai where the fire of God comes upon the top(mind) of the mountain and covers the whole mountain(body) with His glory. Where we learn to hear His voice and be led by Him, as the truth is in Jesus.
Eph 4:20 But you have not so learned Christ, Eph 4:21 __if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus:_
This learning Christ, is the process of rooting out the lies of our previous father that still are embedded in our inner mind.
When Psalm 139 says wicked way, it is not asking God to remind us whether we committed a sin long ago, or yesterday. It is not asking Him to show whether we have confessed everything or not. All your sins are forgiven under the new covenant.
This is what Psalm 139:24 is saying when it says any wicked way.
עֹצֶב ‛ôtseb o’-tseb A variation of H6089; an idol (as fashioned); also pain (bodily or mental): – idol, sorrow, X wicked.
Wicked thing means:
- an idol
The Psalmist cries out to His Father, Lord search me with Your loving gaze! Search me with the candle of the Lord, my very own spirit joined with yours. Search me deep inside and see if there be any idol that I worship instead of You dear Father. Is there any idol image of You Father, that I have fashioned myself in my mind?
If we ever think that God is not 100% for us, then we have lies in our deep mind. These lies have formed a different god than the true God. This is an idol of God, not Him in truth. So it needs to be recognised and repented of asking forgiveness for believing the lies.
The Psalmist is crying out for the Father to reveal if there is any area of PAIN in his heart. It is easy for people to simply assume that that because they believe in Jesus that there is no bad thing in them any more. But the bad thing, is not necessarily a sin they committed. It may be sins done to them. The pain must be revisited and healed. This is ESSENTIAL!
Now, we do not try to make things happen, or to look under every memory. We simply do as the Psalmist does-We ask God to reveal. The flesh can easily take all this to far and try to make a ministry out of it. These things are simply fine tuning and running repairs for the believer as he seeks to walk with God.
We do not need to go over things that we have already prayed about before UNLESS the Lord shows new angles to it and new revelation of any hold it still may have. So we bring our wounds to Him to reveal all and show us what to do to be healed.
Again the Psalmist is asking God to reveal if there be any sorrow in his heart. Sorrow, like self pity is one of Satan’s main weapons against us. Self pity keeps us locked into the place of being stuck. It is a smokescreen that stops us receiving God’s grace. It is connected to inner vows we made when we were hurt by life, circumstances or whatever it was. We make the vow that we will never trust God again, that we will never trust people again, that we will never trust a man with our heart again, or a woman, or a pastor etc etc.
The Lord will heal us if we are willing to let go of self pity, which has been our way of not trusting God with our hurts.
The word translated as wicked way in verse 24 comes from a root that means:
to carve, that is, fabricate or fashion; hence (in a bad sense) to worry, pain or anger: – displease, grieve, hurt, make, be sorry, vex, worship
Once again we see that God wants to heal us completely of these negative things hidden deep inside. Worry and anxiety, pain and anger are all HURTS that our loving heavenly Father, the Good Shepherd of the sheep, wants to heal. Many will push all this aside and simply say,
“I am healed by His stripes!”and go on for years being hindered in their relationships with people and God. It is time to be honest with ourselves and with God and ask Him to search us and reveal the hurtful things.
